“GirlSpeak” is a series of pieces which explore communication between and towards women and young girls.
The vernissage will be held on July 19, at Make a Point, and the exhibition will be open to the public until August 10.
The ink drawings are lifesize images of women based on prehistoric artifacts, superimposed with emojis and blurbs taken from magazine articles targeted towards adolescent girls. The combination of these elements is meant to underline the trivialization of the representation of women in the media, as well as point to an evolution in the language used between them, by claiming ownership on present day symbols.
Adina Andrus is a mixed media artist, born in Romania, currently based in New York. She studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Art Students League in New York City. Her mixed media work, sculptures and installations explore themes that she finds herself attracted to in light of personal experiences and current events—women’s representations in ancient and contemporary culture, the theme of “the outsider”, the dynamics of human interactions. The pieces are semi-abstract, highly textural and multi-layered both physically and in meaning. Adina has been exhibiting in numerous galleries across the United States, most recently at the St. Louis Artists Guild, Gallery 254 in New York, Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild and the Delaware Contemporary and she is currently completing an artist’s residency at Trestle Art Space in Brooklyn, NY.
