Safe Perimeter

Vlad Albu, Alle Dicu, Dan Iordache, Vlad-Radu Popescu, Ana-Maria Preduţ, Mihai Şovăială

Exhibition coordinated by Cristina David and Alina Șerban

What if, instead of avoiding the gaze of the past, we attempt to respond back to it, delineating in the most natural way a safe perimeter, where memories, forgotten personal stories and cultural themes present in the recent history are being negotiated?

Thus, the imagined perimeter becomes a territory of personal speculation, a consent assumed by the six artists in order to agglutinate, inside the protective grid, the past and the present. Both ambiguous and normative, Safe Perimeter becomes similar to an exchange program where fragments of existence, of recovered reality, sometimes critically investigated, are being disclosed to the viewers.

This exhibition was organised as part of the course “Clowns of Catastrophe: A Decade of Radicalism, Humor and Identity Politics in Russia, Romania, former Yugoslavia and Baltic States”, conceived by Cristina David and Alina Șerban with the support of PATTERNS Lectures, initiated by ERSTE Foundation and implemented by WUS Austria, and the National University of Art Bucharest, Photo-Video department. The exhibition is developed in response to the critical positions and recurrent themes present in art after the fall of the Iron Curtain, such as identity, trauma and the rewriting of recent history.
